Cumberland County Demographics


The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is a full service, internationally accredited Sheriff's Office which serves a vibrant military and industrial community located in the southeast region of North Carolina; better known as the “Sandhills” region. 

Cumberland County is 661 square miles with a total population of approximately 304,000 persons and is comprised of mostly low to middle income wage earners.  There are numerous municipalities in Cumberland County to include Fayetteville, Falcon, Godwin, Hope Mills, Linden, Spring Lake, Stedman, Eastover and Wade, with Fayetteville being the largest.  Also located within Cumberland County are Fort Bragg Army Base and Pope Air Force Base.  Fort Bragg is home to the Army’s Airborne and Special Operations units and Pope Air Base is home to the 43rd Airlift Wing.  Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base serve as the major employers, as well as economic stimulus in Cumberland County.

Cumberland County is also home to many industries that manufacture air filters, automobile tires, carpets, clothing, farm chemicals, paints, pesticides, synthetic fibers, and tools.  Cumberland County is also a vibrant agricultural community growing major crops such as corn, cotton, small grains, soybeans and tobacco. 

Cumberland County is located near the Cape Fear River and is approximately 107 miles north from North Carolina’s coastal region.  Cumberland County serves as a major transportation hub in southeast North Carolina: being dissected by Interstate 95, US Highways 301 and 401, NC State Highways 87, 210, 24, 59, a major CSX railroad spur, and Fayetteville Regional Airport.  This major transportation thoroughfare also serves as a major military deployment point. 

Cumberland County is also home to the Cumberland County School System.  The Cumberland County School System is the 4th largest school system in the state of North Carolina and the 78th largest in the United States.  Cumberland County Schools has approximately 54,000 students enrolled and has over 6,000 full time employees, making Cumberland County Schools the largest civilian employer in Cumberland County.
