Forensic Firearms Examiner

The Firearms Section of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is an integral part of the [Crime Scene Section.] The two assigned Firearms Examiners responsibilities include the test firing of firearms that are seized as part of criminal investigations, comparison of evidence to determine if the bullets and cartridge cases were fired from a questioned firearm.

Other duties include: assisting in Crime Scene Investigations, advising on trajectory path determination, and giving assistance on muzzle to target distance determination. The CCSO Firearms Examiners assist 60 other Federal, state, and local agencies in their investigations when time is a factor in keeping criminals off the street.

The Firearms Examiners are members of the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE), an organization that conducts training, ethical oversight, and is a leader in bringing the science of firearms and toolmark examination forward.
