Fugitive/Warrants Section

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Division is a specialized section within the Sheriff’s Office for the specific purpose of fugitive apprehension. The Fugitive Division is the only section within the Sheriff’s Office that has the authority to return wanted fugitives from justice who are apprehended outside of the State of North Carolina, back to Cumberland County for adjudication of their felony charges. The Fugitive Division conforms to the rules of the United States Uniform Criminal Extradition Act and North Carolina Fugitive Extradition rules as mandated by the North Carolina General Assembly and the Governor’s Office.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Division is also responsible for the following tasks. The apprehension and extradition of subjects located within the jurisdiction of Cumberland County who are wanted by an agency or agencies outside of the State of North Carolina. The return of subjects wanted by our agency, and extradition of these subjects from outside of North Carolina back to our jurisdiction for formal charging and trial. The entry of all warrants and orders for arrest including Grand Jury Indictments into the local records management system (PISTOL) and the entry of felony and serious misdemeanor warrants/orders for arrest into the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) or the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). After these entries are made, it is the responsibility of the Fugitive Division to research wanted subject’s records in an attempt to locate the wanted subject.  If the wanted subject is believed to have fled the jurisdiction of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the Fugitive Division will make attempts to locate the county or state where the subject may have taken refuge. If information is developed on the whereabouts of the fugitive, the Fugitive Division will forward the lead to that jurisdiction where the fugitive is believed to be and request that jurisdiction make an attempt to arrest the subject for Cumberland County.
