APPLICATION
Any citizen applying for the position of
Detention Officer must fall into the guidelines of the following:
SUMMARY OF THE SELECTION PROCESS
It is the policy of the Cumberland County
Sheriff's Office to hire, recruit, train, and promote employees without

INTERVIEW An
applicant should allow a day for the interview. The applicant will not actually
be engaged in this activity for that time but can expect to spend the day with
the Sheriff's Office due to necessary scheduling for groups of applicants.
POLYGRAPH If
selected, an applicant should allow at least two hours for the pre-polygraph
interview and the polygraph examination.
PSYCHOLOGIST A
selected applicant should allow a day for the psychologist appointments. The
applicant will not actually be engaged in this activity for that full time
frame, but can expect to spend different periods during the day with
psychologist.
PHYSICAL EXAM Applicants
given a physical examination should allow at least two hours for the
examination.
Areas of Inquiry/Examination Those applicants selected for background
investigation will be investigated by one or more members of the Sheriff's
Office who will inquire into the applicants education record, personal conduct,
credit record, criminal history, prior employment performance and relationships
with other people before a final offer of employment is made.
Applicants should advise references and past
employers they will be contacted by the Sheriff's Office and to respond to the
inquires in a timely fashion. Applications will not be processed until all
inquires are received back by the Sheriff's Office.
Those applicants selected for polygraph
examination will be examined by a Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Polygraph
Examiner. General areas of questioning during the pre-polygraph screening
include, but are not limited to, any criminal history, including use of illegal
drugs, credit history, education, employment history and military service.
Selected applicants will be tested and
evaluated by a psychologist and undergo a physical examination.
SALARY
The minimum salary for trained, certified
Detention Officers is $25,642.00 as of 07/13/2003.

Persons we hire that
are already NC certified will start with a 5% lesser salary until successful
completion of field training.

Persons we hire that
are not certified will start with a 10% lesser salary. Employees will receive a
5% salary increase after successfully completing the Detention Officer's
Certification Course and will receive the additional 5% salary increase after
successful completion of field training.
RETIREMENT BENEFITS
Employees' retirement benefits are
administered by North Carolina Local Government Employee's Retirement System.
Medical and Dental Group Insurances and a 401K Plan are available to employees.
ELIGIBILITY To be
eligible for participation in the retirement system you must be working in a
permanent position at least 1,000 hours per year (20 hours per week).
CONTRIBUTIONS Each
employee contributes 6% of salary each pay period. The county pays 4.9% of all
salaries.
UNREDUCED BENEFITS You may
retire with an unreduced service retirement benefit after:
You reach age 65 and completed 5 years of
creditable service.
You completed 30 years of creditable service.
REDUCED BENEFITS You may retire early with reduced retirement benefit
after:
You reach age 50 and completed 20 years of
creditable service.
You reach age 60 and completed 5 years of creditable service.
You reach age 55 and completed 5 years of creditable service if you are a law
enforcement officer.
DISABILITY RETIREMENT After 5
years of creditable service, if you become totally and permanently disabled for
work, as approved by the Medical Review Board, you may become eligible for
disability retirement benefits. Your disability benefit is based on the same
formula as service retirement, which means your creditable service is counted
as though you continued working to the earliest date you would have qualified
for an unreduced service retirement allowance (age 65 or 30 years of service).
DEATH BENEFIT After 1
year of creditable service, if you die before age 70 while still employed, your
beneficiary will receive a lump sum payment that equals the salary you earned
during the previous calendar year or previous 12 months, whichever is greater,
but not more than $20,000.00. The death benefit is paid also if you die:
Within 366 days of the last day for which
you were paid salary if you are receiving disability retirement benefits.
Within 90 days of the last day which you
were paid salary if you stop working for your employer for any reason.
